Sketch of a gull walking in shallow river water. One foot is raised as it steps toward the shore. The water ripples from its steps and its form is reflected in the rippled water below it. The bird is calm in expression and posture. This is a simple sketch, with sketchy white lines on a black background.

Gull walking in the river — October 5 sketch

River gull for day 5 of daily sketching in October. I saw this gull at so-called Kingston Point Beach during the local Running Down the Walls this year1, when I took a moment to walk down to the beach from the pavilion where we were hanging out, sheltered from the rain.

Gulls at the river beach also inspired art for a flyer for the event. I had seen them on a cold December day at beach a couple of years ago. I won’t go so far as to say the birds on the flyer are gulls – they’re more abstract than that – but when it was time to sketch out some flyer art, those birds at the river, flying free, were on my mind.

  1. You haven’t missed RDTW in so-called NYC, which has been rain-dated for October 18; this was our foray into RDTW upstate, and upstate we do it in the rain. ↩︎
